I was moved by my students today. What a wonderful group of young adults I have. This morning, there was an announcement by our Grade 1 students about how they made snowmen infront of the school during the morning of yesterday's snowy day. They told us about how much fun they had, finding eyes, noses, and buttons for their snowmen. Then, they said that in the afternoon, their snowmen were destroyed by some "big kids". Their message was that they wished that the big kids would please stop bullying them by ruining things they'd made. My heart broke for these little 5 and 6 year olds, and afterwards, when I spoke to my students about it, I saw that they'd been affected by this, too. We had a class discussion about how upset these children were, and my Grade 8 students decided to do something about it. One student spoke up and said "We should go out there and re-make their snowmen!". The rest agreed wholeheartedly, so instead of doing what was in the day's plans, we got into outdoor gear (with and without gloves and/or mittens), and trucked out to the front of the school. My students spent 20 minutes rebuilding the snowmen right outside of the Grade 1 classrooms. We had waves, thumbs up, and little smiles peering at us through the windows. In the end, we built 9 new snowmen for the Grade 1s, and later found out that they'd only made 4 yesterday and were delighted about the 9 that they saw outside.
One comment by one student sparked a whole class to do something great for a younger generation. I am so proud of the way my students stepped up today. They are truly a great group of young people and I am lucky every day to get the opportunity to teach them!
